How much mulch do you need?
To calculate mulch, measure your bed, choose a depth (2-3 inches suits most beds), and the calculator converts the volume into cubic yards and bags. Mulch is typically bagged in 2 cubic feet, so it takes about 14 bags to equal a cubic yard. For example, a 12x12 area (144 sq ft) at 3 inches deep needs about 1.3 cubic yards, or roughly 18 bags. For large areas, order bulk by the yard. Comparing materials? The topsoil calculator and cubic yards calculator use the same method.
Frequently asked questions
How much mulch do I need?
Measure the bed area in square feet and pick a depth (2-3 inches is typical for beds). Multiply area by depth in feet and divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 200 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep needs about 1.85 cubic yards, or roughly 25 bags of 2 cubic feet.
How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
Mulch is usually bagged in 2 cubic feet, so a cubic yard (27 cu ft) is about 13.5 bags — round up to 14. If you can find 3 cu ft bags, it takes 9 per yard. Beyond about 6-8 bags, bulk mulch by the yard is usually cheaper.
How deep should mulch be?
Two to three inches is ideal for most beds — enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture without smothering roots. Use 3-4 inches for weed-prone or sloped areas, and keep mulch a couple of inches away from tree trunks and plant stems.
How much area does a bag of mulch cover?
A 2 cubic foot bag covers about 12 square feet at 2 inches deep, or 8 square feet at 3 inches. Doubling the depth halves the coverage. This calculator works out the exact number of bags for your area and depth.
How much do 20 bags of mulch cover?
Twenty 2 cubic foot bags equal 40 cubic feet of mulch. That covers about 240 square feet at 2 inches deep, or roughly 160 square feet at 3 inches deep. If your beds are larger than that, bulk mulch by the cubic yard (about 13.5 bags per yard) is usually cheaper.
How much does a yard of mulch weigh?
Bark mulch is light — roughly 0.4 to 0.6 tons (about 800-1,200 lb) per cubic yard when dry, and more when wet. That means a pickup can usually carry 2-3 yards, but check your vehicle’s payload rating.
How much mulch do I need for a 12x12 area?
A 12 ft x 12 ft area is 144 square feet. At 2 inches deep that is about 0.9 cubic yards (roughly 12 bags of 2 cu ft); at 3 inches deep it is about 1.3 cubic yards (about 18 bags). Round up and add a little extra for settling.
